In conversation with Andrea Weiss and Jochen Hick

Filmmakers Andrea Weiss, director “BONES OF CONTENTION” and Jochen Hick, director “MY WONDERFUL WEST-BERLIN” discuss in this talk how queer historiography can influence the identification process of children and young adults; the importance of accessible queer archives as well as the difficulties filmmakers can face during the process of research.

Biography Andrea Weiss

Born in Bristol, Pennsylvania in 1956, she is a documentary filmmaker and non-fiction author. In 1984 she co-founded with Greta Schiller the film production company Jezebel Productions which was recently honoured with a retrospective in Buenos Aires. She co-wrote and co-directed Escape to Life: the Erika and Klaus Mann Story which screened in the New German Films section of the Berlinale in 2001. She has received numerous awards and fellowships including the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Programme. She has a PhD in history and has been professor of film and video at the City College of New York since 2003.

Biography Jochen Hick

Born in Darmstadt, Germany in 1960, he studied film at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg and also inBologna between 1981 and 1987. He has worked as a freelance writer, journalist, director and producer for film and television. In 1994 he founded his own production company, Galeria Alaska Productions. Between 2007 and 2010 he was editor-in-chief and deputy director of programming at TIMM TV channel. Out in Ost-Berlin – Lesben und Schwule in der DDR (Out in East Berlin – Lesbians and Gays in the GDR) screened in Panorama in 2013, and Der Ost-Komplex (The GDR Complex) in 2016.

  2. Thanks for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do a little research about this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I learned more from this post. I am very glad to see such fantastic information being shared freely out there.
